Almennt
Búkur kubbslaga, fremur stuttur og breiður og þakinn dökkum, ílöngum ljósfærablettum sem mynda 7 til 8 raðir, skáhallt eftir kviðnum. Lengd möttluls allt að 330 mm. Aftanvert eru stórar sporöskjulaga sundblöðkur. Armar mjög langir, allt frá 1,5 til 3 föld búklengdin. Á enda hvers arms er áberandi dökkleitt og ílangt ljósfæri. Kringum augun eru sautján smágerð ljósfæri, en örsjaldan 16 eða 18. Tegundin virðist sjaldgæf við Ísland, en finnst þó suður af landinu; útbreidd um Miðjarðarhafi og austanvert Atlantshafi frá Íslandi að Suðurskautslandi og þaðan í austurátt, um sunnanvert Indlandshaf, til Ástralíu og Nýja Sjálands. Tegundin H. bonnelli syndir upp um sjó á 500 til 1500 m dýpi, en dvelur einnig á botni. Stöku dýr hafa fundist á rúmlega 2000 m dýpi. Dýrin eiga það til hópast sman í allstórar torfur og eru mikilvæg fæða ýmissa stærri ránfiska og tannhvala, einkum búrhvals.

Histioteuthis bonnellii (Ferussac, 1834)
Mantle conical, relatively short, broad; length is up to 330 mm. The species is rare in Icelandic waters, off the southern shores only, which is the northern limits of its distribution. It is bradly distributed in eastern part of the Atlantic, extending from south of Iceland to to the south-eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, south-western Pacific and the southern Indian Ocean. H. bonnellii is a meso- to bathypelagic oceanic species, and may also dwell at the bottom. It has been found at 1500-2000 m water depth. H. bonnellii may show schooling or shoaling behavior and is an important prey of the sperm whale.
