Almennt
Frekar stórvaxin tegund, bolur allt að 80 cm á lengd, mjósleginn og sívalur; augun hliðstæð, en liggja örlítið nær kviðhlutanum; neðan við augun eru ljósfæri. Lengd sundblöðku er undir helmingnum af lengd bols; breidd sundblöðku er meiri er lengdin. Gripkólfar áberandi breiðir, þaktir 4- til 6-faldri röð af stórum sogskálum, sem eru smærri nær endunum.
B. riisei er úthafstegund, útbreidd um öll heimshöf, nema á hafsvæðum sem liggja næst heimsskautunum. Kjördýpið er á 200 til 1000 m (mesopelagic), en hefur þó fundist á 3000 m dýpi. Aðeins fundust tvö hálfvaxin eintök af tegundinni í verkefninu botndýr á Íslandsmiðum.

Brachioteuthis riisei (Steenstrup, 1882)
Mantle length up to 80 mm. Distribution worldwide, from the low Arctic to the low Antarctic waters. It is rarely encountered in Icelandic waters. Only 2 juvenile specimens were found during BIOICE program. A mesopelagic, oceanic specis, mainly at 200 to 1000 m, but has been found at 3000 m water depth. B. riisei is rather poorly known, probably comprising a complex of two or more closely related species of squids.
