(Galiteuthis armata)

Almennt

Galiteuthis armata Joubin, 1898

This is a rather small species, with mantle length up to 610 mm. It is a meso-bathypelagic species, distributed in the Atlantic from about 25º S on the African shores and up to the north from Nova Scotia in the western North Atlantic, up to about 60 º N in the central North Atlantic and up to 62 º N on the Norwegian shores. A single specimen was collected in the year 2015, in the southern part of Denmark Strait, at 65.6 º N. It seems most likely that the species also occurs in Iceland waters, although it was not found during the BIOICE program, which was focused on sampling the benthic fauna.
