Almennt

Bolur er keilulaga, allt að 400 mm; afturendi mjósleginn með áberandi borðalaga sundblöðkum. Augun mjög stór og útstæð, með þremur ljósfærum á hvorum augnbikar. Armar fremur stuttir, um helmingur af lengd bols. Tegundin er útbreidd í Norður Atlantshafi frá Frakklandi til Grænlands og við austurströnd N-Ameríku suður að Flórída. Hefur fundist á 40 til 2700 m dýpi. Tegundin er mikilvæg fæða fyrir ýmis rándýr, einkum tannhvali, sverðfisk og bláhákarl.

Teuthowenia megalops (Prosch, 1847)

Mantle conical and elongated, length up to 400 mm. The species is meso- and bathypelagic oceanic species, rather rare in Icelandic waters, and is mainly distributed in Nortn Atlantic, from France to Greenland and along the eastern shore of North America, south to Florida. It lives at 40 m to 2700 m; paralarvae and juveniles are epipelagic. Very important food source of toothed whales. The species is not common in Icelandic waters, but the northernmost area of reproduction is in the southern parts of the Denmark and Davis Straits, and south of Iceland.
