(Vampyroteuthis infernalis)

Almennt

Vampyroteuthis infernalis Chun, 1903

Mantle length up to 210 mm. Distribution is in the tropical areas in world oceans. It is a pelagic, oceanic species, mostly found at 600 to 3300 m depth and strongly associated with the oxygen minimum zones. The main distributional zone reaches 57.1°N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but the only Icelandic, and currently the northernmost record of this species, is about 500 km north of the main range.
