Placiphorella atlantica (Verrill & Smith, 1882)

Synonyms:

BIOICE stations: Not found in the BIOICE samples; specimens in IINH collection from one location. 

Bathymetrical range in Icelandic and Faroese waters: 78 - 833 m

Substrate: Stone and pebble bottoms.

Temperature range: 1° - 8°C. 

Salinity: > 35,0 ppm ?

World distribution: Iceland, the Faroes, the Atlantic Ocean from S of England to W of Sudan, off the New England coast, northern Pacific Ocean, eastern Indian Ocean and Chile (Sneli 1992, Kaas & Van Belle 1994)      

World bathymetrical range: 155 - 2000 m

Remarks: In 1987 P. atlantica was for the first time recorded in the North Atlantic north of 50° N as it was recorded three times during the BIOFAR project (Sneli 1992). Up to the find during BIOICE the species had been found on 14 localities with 17 specimens in the North and South Atlantic. The species uses its large headflap to trap prey such as amphipods, small shrimps, small crabs, and polychaete worms (McLean 1962).
