Fischerina communis (Seguenza, 1880)

Fischerina communis (Seguenza, 1880) – sensu Jones, R.W., 1994. The Challenger Foraminifera, The Natural History Museum, London, Oxford Univ. Press: p. 112-113, Pl.114, figs. 4-7.

Description: Initial part is discoidal, with sharp to rounded periphery, later rectilinear or flaring. Initial chamber arrangement is an undivided planispiral tube of several windings; then the spiral tube is divided into segments, some of which are slightly inflated at the aboral end and tapering towards the apertural end, similar to Cornuloculina; the length of the planispiral segments are initially of about half of whorl in length, becoming successively shorter in the latest windings. About half of the available specimens have rectilinear or flaring chambers. In the spiral part of the test the aperture is a constricted to s simple round opening, but is a narrow elongated slit in the flaring part, bordered with a slightly raised lip. The walls are thick and laminated; surface is rather coarse and matt, with traces of striations in the largest specimens. Length of largest rectilinear specimen is 3,5 mm but most are about 1 mm in diameter. 35 specimens were picked from 18 of the 1031 Bioice samples that were checked for forams.
