Sigmoilopsis schlumbergeri (Silvestri, 1904)

Sigmoilopsis schlumbergeri – sensu Jones, R.W., 1994. The Challenger Foraminifera, The Natural History Museum, London, Oxford Univ. Press: pp. 23 and 24, Pl.VII, figs.1-4.

Description: Test is elongated and tapering to both ends in side view; lens shaped in apertural view; length is almost 2 times the width. Chambers are elongate of nearly uniform width, about half a coil in length. Sutures are indistinct; except for slight depressions running the length of the test between successive chambers. Chamber arrangement is sigmoid, i.e. chambers are added alternatively to a duplet of relatively tightly coiled equiangular spirals. Test wall is very thick, porcellaneous, with a relatively thin surface layer that is densely impregnated with sand grains of a varying size. In cross section, the agglutinating surface layer seems absent from the septa between previous chambers, except for some scattered sand grains. Aperture is round, with an indistinct phialine lip and a bar like tooth at the end of a short neck. Length of largest specimens about 1 mm, but commonly around 1,5 mm.

Diagnosis: This species differs from Sigmoilopsis wanganuiensis in being much smaller, the shape is elongated and tapering to both ends; the thin agglutinating surface layer, is often is partly worn off, revealing the inner porcellaneous wall.
