Frjókorn geta haft skaðleg áhrif á heilsu manna. Talið er að 30% fullorðinna og 40% barna þjáist af ofnæmiskvefi og allt að 25% mannkyns þjáist af frjókornaofnæmi og ofnæmisasma. Hægt er að minnka ofnæmiseinkenni með því að forðast ofnæmisvaka en slíkt er hægt með frjókornaspám. Með frjókornaspám geta sjúklingar forðast frjókorn þegar þau eru í mestu magni, tekið inn fyrirbyggjandi lyf og skipulagt útivist á þeim tímum sem frjókornagildi eru lág. Í fyrirlestrinum verður rætt um frjókorn og frjókornaspár: Hvað er frjókornaspá í raun? Hverjar eru algengar ranghugmyndir tengdar spám? Hvaða aðferðir er hægt að nota til að spá fyrir um magn frjókorna í lofti? Hvernig virka þær? Er hægt að spá fyrir um frjókorn í lofti á Íslandi? Leitast verður við að svara þessum spurningum og mörgum fleiri á aðgengilegan hátt.
English Summary
Pollen has deleterious effects on human health. Allergic rhinitis is estimated to affect up to 30% of adults and 40% of children, and hay fever and allergic asthma as much as 25% of the population. However, effective allergen avoidance has shown improvement in allergy symptoms. This avoidance can be achieved by delivering pollen forecast to allergy sufferers. Forecasts allow patients to avoid exposure to high pollen levels and prompt them to take prophylactic medication and to plan outdoor activities for periods of low pollen levels.
During the talk ideas connected with pollen, forecasting will be introduced. What actually is the forecast and forecasting? What are the common misconceptions connected to forecasts? What methods can be used in order to predict the level of pollen in the air? How do they work? Can we predict the amount of pollen in the air in Iceland? The lecture aims to answer these questions and many more in an accessible way.
