(Gonatus steenstrupi)

Almennt

ENGLISH

Gonatus steenstrupi Kristensen, 1981

Maximum confirmed mantle length is 190 mm, but clearly it can be larger. It is an oceanic species, which generally inhabits the mesopelagic layer, and has been found at 1000 m water depth. Although G. steenstrupi is one of the most abundant squid in the low boreal and temperate Atlantic waters, little is known of its life habits. In Icelandic waters G. steenstrupi, is most common in the boreal waters south and west off Iceland, and less so in the north and east of Iceland. In contrast the congeneric G. fabricii is most abundant in the cold waters north and east off Iceland, but less so in the boreal wateres south and west of Iceland.
