Wildfires and wildlife

The extent and consequences of large wildfires are researched, and post-fire biotic succession is monitored. The project objective is to record and map non-urban areas affected by wildfire and to research the effects of wildfire on the biota.

The largest recorded wildfire in Iceland’s history occurred in the Mýrar region of West Island in 2006. A publication on the Mýrar wildfire came out in Int. J. Remote Sensing in 2011 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160903439858).
