Rocks and minerals

The project objective is to research the composition, variation, and distribution of rock types and mineral types in Iceland, and to examine different ideas about their formation. Samples from the IINH Mineral and Rock Collection are used for this research, and new specimens are added to the collection. Major and trace elements in rocks and minerals are analysed, and isotope measurements are also made. The crystal structure of minerals is investigated by X-ray diffraction.
