Geoconservation and documentation of geoheritage

The project objective is to evaluate and document the geodiversity of Iceland to preserve geoheritage that reflects the diversity of the geology of Iceland and geomorphological processes. This will facilitate the preservation of a spectrum of geological processes and phenomena that cover the geological history of Iceland. At the same time, the project aims to preserve geoheritage with scientific conservation value or other special importance (such as rarity, geodiversity, historical significance, and aesthetic value) that can be considered as reason for protection. Professional geoconservation extends to all features of the bedrock, landform and soil features and processes as well as the natural rates and magnitude of change in those features and processes.
